A New Year's Eve recipe for some family fun. Take one millennium ball covered with 180 triangular mirrors, add a line-up of local entertainment and mix in a spectacular fireworks display over Lake DeSoto.

The result? Celebration 2000 - Lake City's home-grown festival to ring in the new year, set to begin at 6 p.m. today in Olustee Park.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime party," said jazz entertainer Tony Buzzella, who will host tonight's show. "This is a celebration not only for the city of Lake City, but all of Columbia County and North Florida. There's something for everyone."

Tonight's entertainment will feature music from the 20th century. Beginning at 6 p.m., the lineup of entertainment will include:

  • Pam Daly
  • Matt Johns
  • Kylie Williams
  • Tony Buzzella and Friends
  • Tracy Gail
  • Liza Watts
  • Jesse Williams
  • Skip Johns and the Travelers
  • Lady Tapperifics
  • Glitter N' Gold Cloggers featuring director Jenny Lynn Lord.
  • Forrest Combs
  • The gospel group Rapture

At 8 p.m., there will be a dance contest with prizes and featuring the Charleston, jitterbug, twist, Macarena and electric slide. There will be food vendors, and entertainment will be provided by Lani Clark and Company.

A fireworks extravaganza will be from 8:30-9 p.m. Entertainers will be the Glitter N' Gold Cloggers and the "Millennium Dance."

From 9:30 p.m. to midnight, live entertainment and dancing will continue, featuring The Starlight Millennium Band and celebrity impersonators who will portray Glen Miller, Rick Martin, Garth Brooks, Reba McIntire, Eddie Arnold, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, The Back Street Boys and others.

At midnight, a four-foot-wide millennium ball will drop from atop a crane at Orange and Hernando streets to usher in the new year.

Entertainers will come from throughout North Florida, including Live Oak and Lake Butler, Buzzella said.

Although the weather has been cold in the evening, the National Weather Service is predicting a slight warming trend - a fact another festival committee member believes should entice people to join in on the events downtown.

"I think it's very exciting we're able to put something on for the community," said Faye Bowling-Warren, assistant city manager for the City of Lake City, which is a co-sponsor of Celebration 2000, along with Columbia County.

The National Weather Service predicts Friday's weather will be partly cloudy and warmer with low temperatures in the 40s and high temperatures in the lower 70s.

The forecast for New Year's Day will be partly cloudy with lows in the lower 40s and highs in the mid- to upper-60s.

"We encourage people to come down and celebrate the new year in their own home town," Bowling-Warren said.
